The Two-Party System

Our nation has grown and prospered over the last two-hundred-something years. One of our chief assets has been a strong two party system. We started out with the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists and both of these parties morphed into the Democrats and Republicans.

I was raised in a strong Democratic household in New York City. FDR was a saint and we looked at Kennedy as the spokesman for our Generation. Eisenhower was the man who had seen us through the war and was the voice of staid, American conservatism. Our political system functioned well.

Today we see Howard Dean, Ted Kennedy, The Clinton twins, all screeching like alleycats. The Democratic has become the party of --- well -- Lets see if I can put it into words.

There used to be a great TV show called Dobie Gillis. A star of the show was a beatnik named Maynard G. Krebs (Played by the man who was to become Gilligan). Maynard was a beatnik. Maynard described himself as an "Angry Young Man". In one show Maynard was asked what he was angry about. As I recall his answer was "I don't know. That's why I'm angry"

The Maynard G. Krebs approach to today's problems illustrates our practically defunct Democratic party. The have lost control of the House, the Senate, the presidency and the Supreme Court. The reason is plain to see. No one know what they stand for.

It is to our disadvantage as a nation to have major portion of our political system in a total quandry. The two-party system is a check on our government that is vital. I do not rejoice at the apparent self-destruction of this vital voice.
